Dear All

I apologize for writing English, I don't speak any of the Scandinavian languages.

I have the ipportunity to buy a besutifully restored Coronet 38. I am very fond of the lines and beauty of the boat and I love motorsailers. Being on the Canary Islands, I am looking for a boat that can handle rough Atalntic conditions, possibly a crossing, and I wonder if the Coronet 38 fits that category.

It'd pretty hard to find sufficient information on this in English, which is why I am writing in this forum. Any information and advice in this respect would be highly appreciated

Thank you all in advance!
Tony

Hi!

Never having own experience of the 38, I see it's a "fast motor sailor" lightweight balsa sandwich laminate. Although having moderate freeboard and a protective doghouse, comparing it with a Hallberg Rassy from the same age, the C 38 weighs much less making it a bumpier ride.

Thanks, Adrian. I guess I should have added that this is about the C 38 Elvström.

Hi Tony, I have owned my Elvestrom 38 for about 9 years now and my Dad owned one with friends from 1979 to about 2010 when they grew too old to sail, so I have essentially been sailing the same type of boat for 40+ years, I am a big fan. They are lighter than a HR however they are excellent sea boats and sail very well. The V shaped hull means they don't slam and the bulb helps to dampen and break the waves. I don't think my Dad and his friends would have carried on sailing for as long as they did in any other boat. We had an SS Swan 40 before which was much heavier, but she was a beast for 2 of us and we are much happier with the Coronet as she is easier to handle, I have also sailed an HR40 which is a nice boat. We sail our boat year round and brought her across the North sea from Netherlands to the UK in an October F8-F9 W. gale which she took very well.
My only criticisms are that if you are healed over and take a big wave it will crash against the aft cabin return and splash into the cock-pit (need short cockpit covers) and also the companion way hatches on port tack, are too exposed to large waves so fit additional washboards for extra security. It would also be good to get the lines led into the cockpit but i haven't found a satisfactory way yet. Otherwise they are brilliant. Picture attached is my 38 (right) next to my Dad's old 38.

Hi Tony. I have been looking at the CE 38's too. Very nice looking boats. I followed a discussion on a forum where the owner's keel was separating from the hull . It was a 1977. Do you know if the later boats were an improved boat? Also were the later ones balsa cored below the waterline?

I am most interested in the keel attachment situation. Coukd anyone share their experience?
